Sales Tax - Go Figure
A funny thing happened to me on the way to getting an advertising campaign begun this week. It won't be long until my paperback book will be published and 200 of them delivered to my office. That is exciting for a fairly new writer.
I have been working on the ad campaign, hoping to promote the new book as a nice Mothers Day gift for Mom or Grandma. It is a lot of work getting ready to peddle the books to those who will benefit from them. Being a good citizen, I decided to ascertain whether they are subject to Iowa Sales Tax. I wondered because I consider them an extension of my writing consulting business. I work with older folks who feel they can tell a story, but that they cannot write.
Of course they can and I can help them. So will my books, but they are going to have to pay the sales tax if they live in this state. The point of this story isn't to complain about the nuisance of collecting the six per cent, but I do have a complaint about finding the information. I spent at least twenty minutes going through the phone book and another ten listening to canned music. Every thirty seconds, a voice assured me I was important and that the next available agent would be with me. All that waiting for a simple answer.
So now that I have gotten that out of my system, I should get back to my advertising copy.
Thanks for listening,
Sharon Foltz, EdD
